What should I paint first?
To start, we recommend painting the smallest areas of the canvas first. If you encounter tiny spaces, using a toothpick can be quite effective. Then, gradually move on to the larger areas.

Another helpful tip is to begin at the top of the canvas and work your way down. This way, you can avoid smudging the wet paint with your hand or arm. The drying paint will be above your hand, reducing the risk of accidental smudging.

Painting one number at a time has its advantages as well. This technique prevents the paint from drying out since you won't be constantly opening and closing different paint containers. It also minimises the amount of brush washing required.

Does my painting need two coats of paint?
Whether you need to apply two coats of paint depends on the colour you're using. Darker colors often require only one layer, while lighter colors may need a second coat. You can determine if a second coat is necessary by checking if you can still see the number key through the first layer of paint. If you prefer not to do a second layer, you can use whiteout to cover the number just before painting that section. Be careful not to cover the numbers too early and forget which colours go where.

My paint has become thick, what should I do?
If your paint becomes thick, ensure that you always seal the paint pots tightly to prevent air from entering. If the paint does dry up a bit, add a few drops of water and mix it well (a toothpick works great for mixing). Even if the paint isn't too dry, adding a few drops of water can make it slightly runnier, which some people prefer to work with.

Should I use an easel?
Using an easel is not necessary for paint by numbers, but it can provide added comfort, especially if you experience back pain. Once you try painting with an easel, you may feel a sense of professionalism that's hard to replicate on a regular table. If you don't have an easel, you can pin, tack, or tape your canvas down to keep it flat. Using foam board is a good idea, as it allows you to easily pin the canvas and provides a flat surface for painting. Additionally, attaching your canvas to foam board makes it portable, so you can paint anywhere.

The numbers on my kit are too hard to read
If the numbers on your paint by numbers kit are too small to read, a simple solution is to take a picture with your phone and zoom in when needed. This habit can also come in handy if you accidentally paint over some numbers; you can refer back to the picture for guidance.

Wash your brushes
Lastly, remember to thoroughly wash your brush before moving on to a new colour to avoid colour contamination.
